San Francisco, CA — HP (NYSE:HPQ) has announced the latest additions to its small- and medium-sized business (SMB) offering, making HP Color LaserJet printing more affordable than ever before. The HP Color LaserJet 3500 and 3700 series printers bring easy-to-use and reliable color printing into SMB offices without sacrificing print quality or speed.

Vibrant color brings life to virtually any printed page, especially in the highly competitive business world,” said Rob Wait, commercial marketing director, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “Companies looking for affordable ways to bring color production into the office will find these new printers to be just what they need to help them stand out in the increasingly competitive market.”

The new HP Color LaserJet printers complement the broad portfolio of innovative imaging and printing systems announced as part of HP’s Smart Office initiative for SMBs. Through Smart Office, HP is delivering products, services and solutions that make technology easy to own for SMBs.

Whether creating internal documents or sales brochures, businesses can rely on the versatile HP Color LaserJet 3500 and 3700 series printers to provide high-impact, affordable color printing. The printers offer remarkable output quality and identical color and black & white print speeds with quick, in-line printing technology.

Both series support Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows® environments. Both are Apple Rendezvous compatible for quick and easy network connections in a Macintosh environment. The printers will debut at Macworld SF 2004 at booth 1607.

The HP Color LaserJet 3500 series keeps installation, use and maintenance simple. The printer’s automatic media type sensing and print mode adjustment deliver consistently great print quality. At 12 pages per minute (ppm) for both color and black & white, even high-volume printing needs can be handled in-house. High-yield 4,000-page print cartridges are designed for efficient operation and minimize user upkeep.

An external USB attached print server is available, enabling easy sharing between multiple users. The series also supports an HP Jetdirect wireless print server for cable-free connections and easy walk-up printing.

The HP Color LaserJet 3700 series is an ideal single solution for small- to medium-size workgroups with its intuitive operation and simple network management and configuration. HP ImageREt 2400 technology provides impressive output quality. The HP Color LaserJet 3700 series prints at16 ppm and is capable of two-sided printing and up to 850 sheets of paper input. HP’s instant-on fuser technology allows the first page to print quickly anytime. Reliable, high-yield, 6,000-page print cartridges greatly reduce user maintenance.

Valuable printer status information is easy to access by the control panel, through the software toolbox or with the award-winning HP Web Jetadmin printing network management software. With HP Jetdirect Fast Ethernet print servers, sharing across networks, including wireless networks, is a snap.

Dead Canon, Compaq, HP, and similar power supplies
Apparently, these power supplies may blow their internal fuse either as a result of an overload, or possibly for no reason at all. In this case, a new fuse will be all that is needed. Of course, it’s also possible that there is a fault in the power supply or in the printer which will cause the new fuse to blow but it’s worth trying a new fuse before more complex troubleshooting.

(From: Jim Steel (procomputer@telisphere.com).)

Repair instructions

The power supply is encased in a bonded 2-piece ABS plastic housing. There is a fuse inside but no way to access the fuse without splitting the case.

Splitting the case:

Unplug the power supply and secure the power supply in a utility vice. Use a short-blade utility knife or linoleum knife to slowly and carefully and cut along the seam where the 2 halves of the power supply are joined. Don’t try to cut the seam all at once. Work a little at a time until the case halves can be separated.

Replacing the fuse:

On a power supply with an unsoldered fuse socket, simply replace the fuse and test the power supply. Alternately, a leaded fuse may be soldered in.

On a power supply with the fuse soldered into the fuse socket, leave the fuse in the socket and solder in a leaded fuse. (A leaded fuse has lead wires extending from each end of the fuse.)

On a power supply with a leaded fuse, unsolder the old fuse solder in a new leaded fuse.

Testing the power supply:

Ensure that the power supply and printer work before bothering to close the case.

Closing the case:

ABS plastic cement may be used to bond the power supply case halves. Alternately, electrical tape may be used to hold the case halves together.
